Give Us Each Day: The Diary of Alice Dunbar Nelson
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (May, 1986)
Authors: Gloria T. Hull and Alice Moore Dunbar-Nelson
Average review score:

each day is a gift
You will be intrigued by Ms Dunbar and made a part of her family. Her diary is so well written that it will inspire you to change your form if you keep one. I read it like a novel. Her day to day entries really gives detailed insight into the lives of African Americans and...it highlights important historical facts with dates attached to them. I didn't realize how valuale this was until I had to do a paper and include some of the information she had referred to. It was wonderful and very entertaining. The writer's sense of humor was an added, welcome surprise.

Average review score:

A photo-filled history of a Colorado mountain town
An entertaining and informative account of the colorful history of Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The book greatly increased our enjoyment of the area during a recent vacation.

Glenwood Springs: The History of a Rocky Mountain Resort
Published in Paperback by Western Reflections Inc (September, 1999)
Author: Jim Nelson
Average review score:

A comprehensive, entertaining history of Glenwood Springs.
Glenwood Springs - The History of a Rocky Mountain Resort is not the typical history book. All of the information is there - from the formation of the geology up to the present day, along with a wealth of vintage photographs. However, Nelson's easy writing style makes the history a treat to read.

Glory in the Name : A Novel of the Confederate Navy
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (15 April, 2003)
Author: James L. Nelson
Average review score:

Great Civil War Fiction
I've been a big Civil War buff for years, and usually I am wary of fiction, but Glory in the Name is my kind of Civil War fiction! The book is very well researched and historically accurate - historical mistakes put me right off a book, but I didn't find them here. Best of all, the action is fast and unrelenting, and the characters, especially Hironymous Taylor, pull you right in. I agree with what Bernard Cornwell wrote - the best Civil War noel I have read!

God and the Land: The Metaphysics of Farming in Hesiod and Vergil With a Translation of Hesiod's Works and Days by David Grene
Published in Hardcover by Oxford Univ Pr on Demand (August, 1998)
Authors: Stephanie A. Nelson, Hesiod Works and Days, and David Grene
Average review score:

Great insight into a great work
Nelson brings a new perspectinve to this subject, an insight that only someone versed in classics and the realities of farming could bring. This book is the best argument yet for scholars to get out of the classroom on occasion and into the feild, as it were.

God Loves You: A Pop-Up Book (Pop-Up Book (Thomas Nelson Publishers).)
Published in Hardcover by Thomas Nelson (May, 1996)
Authors: Arnold Shapiro, Vlasta Van Kampen, and Vlasta Van Kampen
Average review score:

God Loves You a repeat winner!
God Loves You, A pop up book is one of those books that is a true gem. The bright, fanciful pictures, simple words and "magic" pop ups characters absolutely fascinate my grandchildren and the children in my day care. The content of the book is easy for them to understand, and the reinforcement of "God Loves You" on each page makes them feel loved. They soon repeat the phrase with me as we read. It is a wonderful book.

The God of Second Chances: Stories of Lives Transformed by Faith
Published in Paperback by Sheed and Ward (September, 2001)
Authors: Marcia Z. Nelson and Phyllis Tickle
Average review score:

A Book About Everyday People Who Say "Yes" At the Right Time
The stories are not written in a dramatic style; they are about real people living their lives; stumbling along while allowing Spirit to have a small influence with magnificent results.

Expecting more intense miracles, I was at first underwhelmed by the book. However, noticing that the stories lingered with me for the next week, I realized Marcia Z.Nelson is a master at reporting the facts, just the facts, leaving the rest to the reader. It works.

I use this book as a mediation book in the morning. It helps me get outside of "self" and perhaps even allows me to become a little more willing to have God in my daily decisions. A good read, this one.

Going Higher: The Story of Man and Altitude
Published in Paperback by Little Brown & Co (Pap) (June, 1987)
Authors: Charles S. Houston and Gary Nelson
Average review score:

Useful and Entertaining
Dr. Houston has written an excellent book on the effects of altitude on people. He reviews the history of mountain exploration, explains the physiological effects of the reduction of atmospheric pressure, and presents a practical guide for acclimitization to altitude. Whether you are going to ski in the Rockies or climb in the Himilayas, this is a useful and entertaining book. I also recommend "Altitude Illness" by Bezruchka

I found my copy of "Going Higher" in a bookstore in Burlington, Vermont. When I got home I discovered that it had been signed by the author!

The Golfer's Book of Daily Inspiration
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill/Contemporary Books (01 April, 1996)
Author: Kevin Nelson
Average review score:

A Gem A Day
This is an absolutely wonderful book. Every page is an impeccable little exposition on an important component of finding joy in the game, loving the process, getting into the zone, learning to learn, being a better human being, and so on. It's not just a great golf book. I've bought 4 copies so far for pool players I know. It's almost exactly the same set of problems and demands as golf.

I don't like sappy, platitude-ridden material. This stuff is right to the heart of the matter, and is not fluff. I'm going to read it again next year.

Good Neighbors: Companion Planting for Gardeners
Published in Hardcover by Rodale Press (March, 1985)
Authors: Anna Carr and Suzanne Nelson
Average review score:

Wish it were available : <
I had to drive 45 minutes just to get a glance at this wonderful book. Ms. Carr has done a beautiful job of reviewing what meager evidence there is on companion plants and their effectiveness. There are some helpful drawings and an "encyclopedia" section for quick reference. Truly well done, and, unfortunately, currently unavailable everywhere I've looked!
